The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is one of the oldest and most revered motorsport facilities in the world. Constructed in 1909 five miles northwest of downtown Indianapolis, it was included on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum (IMSM) was established in 1956. The Museum offers 37,500 square feet of exhibit space featuring cars, trophies, photographs, racing records, memorabilia, and fine art to interpret the national and international significance of motorsports. We welcome more than 165,000 visitors through our doors 363 days a year and have been named one of USA Today’s top-three best sports attractions in the country.
The Museum’s collection encompasses race cars from many series: IndyCar, NASCAR, Formula 1, Sprint, Midget, motorcycle races, and drag racing. It also includes a variety of passenger automobiles, many of which were manufactured in Indiana by companies that once had ties to racing. These include spectacular examples of Duesenberg, Marmon, and Stutz marques, as well as Ferrari, Mercedes, and a variety of other European passenger car makers. The collection encompasses motorcycles, dragsters, cars and other vehicles that have set world land speed records at various points in history.
